B+E Trailer Licence Test Training ‘near me’ from £250

Another pass for Get Towing trailer licence test training, Julian who met me at Get Towing training head-quarters, in Leigh-on-Sea, in Essex.

Here we carry out these types of trailer licence training courses and trailer towing tests around the Essex area, especially Chelmsford, Basildon and West Thurrock.

He completed a 1 day intensive trailer training driving course and B+E trailer test to gain his trailer test licence on the first attempt with only 2 minor faults…

A Great result 👍

His initial ‘Google’ enquiry was for a ‘trailer test licence near me’ and ‘B+E Trailer Test near me’.

As always the Examiner asks the candidate to read a number plate ‘out loud’ to him, viewed at a maximum distance of approximately 20.5 metres.

Then his Examiner asked approximately 5/6 questions about the trailer and the towing vehicle, Julian answered all his questions correctly, looking under the bonnet and around the vehicle, showing good trailer loading and handling knowledge.

The Examiner for the B+E trailer driving test was very impressed with him during a safe trailer test route drive, with an amazing 2 minor fault test, an excellent result, as he didn’t know the West Thurrock, South Ockendon and Aveley areas of Essex that well.

The reversing manoeuvre to pass the trailer licence test seemed quite easy for Steve on the trailer driving test and was completed with no minor faults, after we practiced  it many times at our reversing site, before the trailer test, really helped him 😎

After that Julian had to carry out the un-couple and re-couple exercise, and inspect the trailer, as if it was a ‘new one’ that he hasn’t seen before, that he was going to be towing on the road.

This scored no minors faults as we had practiced this many times as well.

His trailer licence should be back to his home address within 2/3 weeks as the examiner sent it off for him as his address on the drivers licence was the same as where he currently living.

This is not necessary requirement for the trailer test, it can be in an address different to where you currently live as long as it is changed to a ‘full’ trailer licence within a two year period that the pass certificate is valid for

The roundabouts in the part of West Thurrock in Essex, where we were practicing, can be tricky, but Julian coped well on his trailer training course with the difficult junctions around the parts of Basildon in Essex that we drove around to help him familiarise himself, in readiness for the trailer test.

Basildon and West Thurrock can be particularly challenging if you are not used to the layout of it’s, sometimes awkward, multiple lane approach roundabouts.

We practiced these types of junctions a lot as it is essential for the trailer test candidates to be reading the road signs correctly, to drive the roundabouts successfully, and maintain trailer test standard.

Basildon and West Thurrock have some difficult roundabouts especially the one under the M25 at junction 30/31!!

These trailer training courses and trailer licence tests are carried out all over the Essex area at locations including;

Basildon, Enfield, Dagenham, Romford, Brentwood, Chelmsford and many more…

Well done again Julian , it’s now easier, safer and legal for you now pulling your food trailer when needed!!

Training for experienced drivers

If you already have the trailer towing entitlement on your Driving License, but require some assistance with any aspect of towing or trailer handling, to build your confidence and improve your level of competence, we are here to help.

If you passed your test before 1st January 1997, you’re generally allowed to drive a vehicle and trailer combination up to a weight of 8,250kg.

Of course, just because you have a trailer license to do so, doesn’t mean that it is advisable.

We recommend that anyone who has the relevant license but has not towed a trailer (or caravan) on the road before, does get some basic trailer training before they actually do try towing on the road. If you would like a friendly chat to discuss this, please don’t hesitate to get in touch, we are always happy to offer advice and discuss your options with you.

latest news…

Two drivers in overweight vehicles were fined £600 and 32 other drivers were stopped by police during the first Caravan and Trailer operation of the season.

Working with the National Vehicle Crime Intelligence Service and Central Registration & Identification Scheme, officers ran the operation at Junction 19 of the A12 trunk road, Chelmsford, near Boreham Services Lorry Park on Tuesday April 4 2020

During the day of action, 34 vehicles were stopped, 21 of which were towing trailers and 11 were towing caravans.

Of the vehicles stopped towing caravans and trailers, only 12 were clear of any faults.

Two overweight 3.5 tonnes vehicles were found to be 15 per cent over the maximum authorised mass when weighed and the drivers fined £600.

A number of vehicles’ tyres were also over the five year recommendation and a total of eight vehicles had breakaway cables that were incorrectly fitted, or none fitted at all.

Some vehicles towing caravans had no extendable mirrors.

The driver of a trailer with a seized braking system was given a £100 fine and 3 points on his licence for driving a vehicle in a dangerous condition.

Of the vehicles that were stopped, four drivers were issued with fines and three licence points after it was discovered they did not have the correct category BE licence.

The Casualty Reduction Team, said: “This was a successful day and we can be satisfied that in all these cases, appropriate and robust action has been taken.

“There are a number of measures that people can take to ensure they are driving safely while towing caravans and trailers.

“If these measures are not taken, there can be serious and quite frankly tragic ramifications for all involved.

“We will be carrying out more of these checks, the Police stated, so please heed the warning and ensure you are being responsible on the road.”

If the conditions aren’t met exactly it can result in the driver being unlicensed and uninsured which could carry a maximum of 9 penalty points and a fine of up to £1000, and in some cases maybe even a ban.

Trailer training and caravan towing courses

Some trailer training providers will recommend 3, 4 or even up to 5 day courses!

We are confident that we can get most candidates with very little towing experience through the B+E towing test successfully within a day Or two day course.

With candidates who are more experienced and confident in towing in just one day, providing their general driving ability is of a good standard. The reason we are so confident is that your training is provided by grade A DVSA approved instructors, who are up to date with all the latest DVSA trailer test regulations and requirements.

A lot of trailer training companies conduct towing training courses where they are based, but then you have to travel miles to the nearest DVSA test centre to take your trailer test, which can be totally unfamiliar to you.

1 Day training course = £250

This course is designed for someone who has previous experience and who is confident with reversing a trailer and who showed a good standard of drive on the assessment, with only a few driving faults “bad habits” to sort out. The training course would conclude with the actual B+E trailer test at the end of the day. A lot of people prefer to split this course over two half days, with exceptional results.

2 Day training course = £450

This course is designed for someone who has only limited experience in towing and reversing trailers and caravans, or someone who had a number of driving faults “bad habits” on the assessment. This course would be a full day of trailer training followed the next day by the half day which would conclude with the actual B+E trailer test.

Trailer Licence Training in Romford from only £250

There are many methods of trailer training and learning how to tow  a trailer safely and develop the confidence you need to do so.

At Get Towing we provide expert trailer test licence training, to allow you to learn firsthand the skills needed to tow safely and efficiently.

one day 6 hour, trailer training course = £250

two day 12 hour, and trailer training course = £450

One-on-one teaching is the best method to learn any new skill as you get the individual attention from an expert in that field.

They should be able to answer almost any question you have, when you have it, and can also create a focus around the areas you personally struggle with most; this makes the trailer training personal and effective for you.

As well as this you are acquiring the important experience of towing a trailer first hand which, like learning to drive, is possibly the fastest and effective way to learn how to control your trailer, whilst having guidances day trailer trailer test coaching  to correct any mistakes.

If you feel that one on one lessons are not for you, here are few other methods you could use to support you whilst learning how to tow your trailer:

TRAILER TRAINING MATERIALS

For some people having a step by step guide to help you learn can be useful, especially with the aid of photos to help for visualisation. Books will allow you to learn in your own time and you are able to create notes and bookmarks at places of importance. This gives you the opportunity to personalise your own trailer training and easily go back to sections you may struggle with.

BLOGS

Blogs can be very useful when it comes to learning new skills as each person experiences the process differently. By reading blogs about passing the trailer test, you may come across issues and relatable content that an expert driver may not have come across before or you may be too embarrassed to ask about.

VIDEOS

If you have the internet at hand, videos are a great recommendation as you can find a wide variety of both expert opinions and the opinions of others in a situation like you , wanting to pass the trailer test.

You also get a large amount of useful information in at once, which may be harder to find and take longer to cover in a book or blog. Videos are great because they allow you to watch demonstrations as many times as you like and they often show common mistakes and not how to do it, making it both cost and time effective. We recommend watching videos especially for how to reverse with a trailer as knowing the signs and what to look out for are important.

PRACTICE!

Like with learning to drive, practice will always be your best chance at improving your skills. Finding somewhere quiet to practice your trailer training skills is recommended. Also being aware it is easy to make dents in the car with the trailer, when you are not yet familiar with how to reverse it, should be noted to avoid frustration and upset!

Learning how to tow and reverse a trailer does not have to be a difficult process, and by using the tools and resources available online and in the local area it can be made considerably easier and give you the confidence and the knowledge needed to get you from A to B with ease.

The driver should be able to demonstrate that they can consistently drive skilfully, safely and competently at all times during their trailer training course and trailer test.
Also, he driver should be able to demonstrate that they know the principles of good trailer towing driving and road safety, and then apply them in practice to the following subjects as a basis for the trailer test;

• Expert handling of controls.
• Use of correct road procedure.
• Anticipation of the actions of other road users and taking appropriate action.
• Sound judgment of speed, distance, timing and general road positioning.
• Consideration for the convenience and safety of other road users.
• Safety precautions on entering the vehicle and expert use of the controls.
• Move away straight ahead or at an angle and making normal stops.
• Approaching and turning right hand and left hand corners.
• Dealing with road junctions.
• Dealing with crossroads.
• Meeting, crossing the path of, overtaking other vehicles, allowing adequate clearance for other road users and anticipation.
• Dealing with pedestrian crossings. Giving appropriate signals in a clear and non-confusing manner.

Preparing for Cat B+E trailer test
You may be uninsured during your trailer training if you do not abide by the licensing regulations, even if you are insured to drive the vehicle ‘without’ a trailer.
Anyone allowing or asking someone to commit these offences can also be prosecuted.

Most vehicle insurance companies give at least third party cover for the trailer training course, but may not pay for repairs to the trailer.

You should ideally only get trailer test training from fully registered DVSA Driving Instructors

There are many amateur groups out there who think they can teach trailer training but because they are only just amateurs they might not be giving enough correct tuition for you to to pass the stringent tests set by the DVSA.

If you pay anything for your trailer training the Instructor must be DVSA registered or they are breaking the law. If they are Observers, that’s exactly what you get, someone to sit next to you who observes, get a fully qualified DVSA Instructor who is a professional at trailer test teaching.

The trailer test

The trailer test takes place at the same test centres for drivers of Lorries and buses. The test is longer than a Cat B; about 90 min, (the on road part 60 min,) and has a higher fee.
Practical test type Weekday price Weekday evening and weekend price

Cat B+E trailer test

£115.00 week day test
(correct at 2020)
£141.00 weekend Test (whenever available)
(correct at 2020)

You can take your trailer test in either a manual or an automatic towing vehicle, however; taking the Cat B+E test in an automatic means you will only be allowed to tow trailers in an automatic vehicle, even if your ordinary Cat B trailer licence covers you for manuals.

If you pass your test in a manual you can also tow with an automatic.

The minimum test vehicle standards for a Cat B car test also apply to a vehicle and trailer test, with additional requirements for the trailer.
Vehicles that do not meet the minimum test vehicle standards are not suitable for the purpose of taking a trailer test, and your test may be cancelled with the loss of fee.
Cat B+E is the Driving Standards Agency test for vehicle and trailer. You will be expected to show a good degree of skill in the use of all controls.
The Cat B towing vehicle
Vehicles presented for test must be:

• A four wheeled vehicle of no more than 3,500kg MAM.
• Capable of a speed of at least 62.5 mph (100 km/h).
• Legally road worthy, insured, display a valid tax disc, and if it is over three years old must have a valid MoT certificate.
Be fitted with:
• A seatbelt for the examiner.
• A passenger head restraint, this need not be adjustable but must be fitted as an integral part of the seat. Slip on type head restraint is not permissible.
• L-plates displayed on the front of the vehicle and at the rear of the trailer, but not interfering with the driver or examiner’s view
• Have a speedometer that measures speed in miles per hour and kilometers per hour.
• Have no warning lights showing i.e. the airbag warning light, or engine management light.
• Have the same number plate as the trailer.
• Externally mounted, nearside and offside mirrors must be fitted for use by the examiner or any person supervising the test.

Vehicle/Trailer Dimensions must be provided at the time of the trailer test booking.

When walking to and from the manoeuvring area at the test centre you have to wear a High Visibility jacket.

It is important that the vehicles cab is cleaned inside so the examiner does not get dirty. If necessary place a sheet or cover over the seating. If the vehicle is too dirty the examiner may cancel the test at your expense.
Cat B + E (Vehicle and trailer test)
Vehicles presented for test must be a Cat B vehicle, towing a suitably braked, unladen trailer of at least 1,000kg MAM.

But the total weight of the trailer only needs to be 800kg, as a minimum

The examiner may ask for evidence of the trailer MAM, e.g. manufacturers plate.
All vehicle combinations must operate on appropriate brakes and utilise a coupling arrangement suitable for the weight.
A combination used for Cat B+E on or after the 1 October 2003 the following additional standards will apply:
Cargo compartment
Note
The cargo compartment of the trailer must consist of a closed box body which is at least as wide and as high as the towing vehicle; the closed box body may also be slightly less wide than the towing vehicle provided that the view to the rear is only possible by use of the external rear-view mirrors of the towing vehicle.
Combination Requirements
There have been some changes to the type of trailer that can be used on test:
Before October 2003
If you are using a towing vehicle that was registered before October 2003 then you can use any trailer that is plated at 1,000kg gross weight or over. (NB: This is the plated gross weight, which is the weight of the trailer and the load combined). The trailer can be any dimension within the rules of construction and use regulations and any type; which includes boat trailers, horse boxes, flatbeds etc.
After October 2003
Towing vehicles registered after October 2003 must only use trailers that are plated at 1,000kg gross weight or over and be constructed so that the driver cannot see through or over the top, i.e. Horseboxes, Van trailers, Tilt-cover trailers etc. This is so only the side mirrors can be used for the reversing exercise.
Pre-Test check list, the vehicle and trailer must be:
Displaying L-plates to the front of the vehicle and the rear of the trailer.
Accompanied by a person who is at least 21 years old and holds a full driving licence for towing a trailer Cat B+E, they must have held this for at least 3 years. (not to be confused with ‘Grandfather Rights’)
Fitted with externally mounted, nearside and offside mirrors for use by any person supervising the training.
Fitted with an audible or visual device to indicate correct operation of the trailer indicators.
The combination must be legally roadworthy.
Trailer must show 2 white side lights to the front.
The same rear lights as a car, except for reversing lights.
Two triangular red reflectors.
Vehicle and trailer tyres for wear and pressures.
Coolant, windscreen wash, oil and brake fluid.

Matching number plates. (It is an offence to allow the number plate to be obscured. This is now a fixed penalty offence, and therefore more likely to be policed.)

Jockey wheel correctly stowed.
The breakaway cable and electrical plug properly connected.
Check the vehicle and trailer lights.
Trailer handbrake off.
Proof of trailers’ weight via a fixed plate
Keys and locking handles for security devices.
Wheel brace and jack for trailer.
All vehicle combinations must operate on appropriate brakes and utilise a coupling arrangement suitable for the weight.
An emergency breakaway cable must be fitted to the parking brake linkage and the other end clipped or fixed round some fixture on the towing vehicle so that, in the event of the trailer becoming detached from the towing vehicle, the cable will apply the parking brake automatically, before snapping itself. It is not recommended to loop the cable round the towball. (But do so if there is no alternative attachment point.) It is a separate offence not to use the breakaway cable provided.
Tachograph
It is your responsibility as the driver to know whether your vehicle/trailer combination needs a Tachograph.
Ask yourself the following questions:
• Is the vehicle used for hire or reward or for the commercial carriage of goods?
• Is the maximum permissible weight more than 3,500kg?
• Does the trailer consist only of plant or fixed equipment?
• Is the trailer only used for carrying equipment for the drivers own use?

At the Trailer Test Centre make sure you have your full driving licence with you and that it is correctly signed.

The examiner cannot conduct your test if you cannot produce the correct documentation, your test will be cancelled and you will lose your fee!

In Enfield, if you are a driver from that area, you will know there are many roundabouts that will ‘catch out’ drivers on a car and trailer training courses, if planned incorrectly… not what you should be doing, of course, on your B+E trailer driving test.

When approaching a roundabout in Enfield, during your B+E training, you will need to plan well ahead and look for some unusual lane choices that need to be negotiated with skill and care.

Many drivers avoid roundabouts in the Enfield  area regarding them as ‘to difficult’ This of course is unnecessary, if you keep calm,  observe ahead and see the information you can enjoy your Enfield trailer training journey !

Enfield trailer training courses can see you facing three lanes when you approach many roundabouts. Left via the left lane, right via the right lane and ahead, usually from the middle lane, but sometimes the right lane can be used for this too.

These junctions, of course, are not unique to the Enfield area and need to be planned correctly at all times.

The intersection of the A127 and A132 in Basildon, maybe practiced, and has a tricky roundabout. It is important on your B+E training course that you choose your lane correctly here.

An easy method to remember during your trailer training course is, if there are two lanes heading towards your chosen direction try to choose the left option, this should make your B+E training course more successful and safer around the Enfield area.

Enfield also displays roundabouts that have the right lane for going ahead and turning right and left lane for left only.

During trailer training course in Enfield if you find yourself in a situation where you are in the wrong lane for the intended direction don’t panic, go in the direction you can safely take from that lane, don’t make harsh and late lane changes.

This course of action will be fine on a B+E training course, or B+E trailer test, as the examiner will be happy you did the ‘right thing’ rather than just ‘blindly’ following his instructions.

Good luck and safe towing around Enfield!!

Trailer Test Training for experienced drivers

If you already have the trailer towing entitlement on your Driving License, but require some assistance with any aspect of towing or trailer handling, to build your confidence and improve your level of competence, we are here to help.

If you passed your test before 1st January 1997, you’re generally allowed to drive a vehicle and trailer combination up to a weight of 8,250kg. Of course, just because you have a license to do so, doesn’t mean that it is advisable.

Get Towing trailer test training recommends that anyone who has the relevant license but has not towed a trailer (or caravan) on the road before, does get some basic training before they actually do try towing on the road. If you would like a friendly chat to discuss this, please don’t hesitate to get in touch, we are always happy to offer advice and discuss your options with you.

Whatever your current skill level, our trailer test training courses are designed to quickly and affordably get those skills up to speed with the legal requirements and build on your confidence, to allow you to tow a trailer safely on the road.
